32 reported after java earthquake

A powerful earthquake in Jakarta, Indonesia has killed at least 32 and flattened homes. Twelve of the dead were found in Cikangkareng in Cianjur regency.

The earthquake hit West Java Wednesday triggering a landslide that wiped out homes in its path. The village of Tasikmalaya has been sent medical teams. Bloomberg reports that officials have not been able to contact Tasikmalaya. The city is about 125 kilometres from the epicenter. There are reports from AP that at least 12 families are trapped under the rubble in one village. The U.S. Geological Survey says that the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit at 2:55 p.m. Tsunami warnings have been issued for the area. That has since been revoked. More than 700 homes have been flattened due to the earthquake. People are making their way to hospitals. At least 27 people have been admitted in Jakarta hospitals. Sky News reports: "Many houses are flattened to the ground," said Edi Sapuan in Margamukti village, not far from Tasikmalaya. "Only the wooden houses remain standing. Many villagers are injured, covered in blood. We ran as soon as the quake hit. Then, five minutes later, my house collapsed." In 2006 an earthquake in the area claimed 600 lives.

Many students and parents are 'weirded out' about teachers being on the popular social-networking websites

Many students and parents are 'weirded out' about teachers being on the popular social-networking websites Facebook and MySpace after grade-school kids Tweeted about their teachers being on the websites.

Many kids and parents are uncomfortable with their children’s teacher(s) on Facebook and MySpace. But now many elementary and secondary institutions are going as far as banning teachers sending friend requests to their pupils, such as the schools in the Vancouver and Langley school districts, according to the CBC. However, Chris Kennedy, West Vancouver School Board's assistant superintendent, says Facebook can be used for a variety of ways for many schools. Kennedy himself uses the social-networking website to ‘push forward information.’ The assistant superintendent believes most kids ‘live’ online. Nevertheless, Kennedy has altered the way he uses Facebook. He only accepts friend requests from former students and he does not allow them to see his photographs and majority of posts. He also suggests that teenagers do the same standards. Kennedy told CBC, ‘It really is a private journal. It's like opening their bedroom to their teachers, and that's the boundary issue. And I think students need to understand, they don't want teachers to see in there. Teachers don't want to go there.’ In March 2008, according to Canada.com, School Principal Mark Classen was fired from his position at Harrison Hot Springs Elementary School in Fraser Valley, British Columbia because one parent reported seeing a nude photograph of him that he displayed on his personal website.
